San Jacinto State park wilderness (above the Palm Springs Aerial Tram)
Experience the peaceful nature of trees in a 14,000 acre forest surrounded by granite peaks and mountain meadows. Cool , fresh mountain air awaits the 10 min. ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tram.
Hikes: Many options, from a great 5 mile loop through mature fir & pine forest to a secluded campground, to a 3 mile hike with a little rock scrambling for scenic views of the San Andreas fault. This forested area offers a real change from the typical Palm Springs hiking of the desert.
Up for a challenge, lets climb to the 2nd highest peak in Southern California, Mt. San Jacinto, 10,834 ft.
Joshua Tree Natl Park (Mojave desert paradise)
800,000 acres of pure desert solitude! Wide open spaces where Native Americans, cattle rustlers & gold miners once lived. This is a special place where the Sonoran & Mojave deserts mix. Unearthly rock formations, unique & statuesque Joshua trees and old adobe homesites combine to offer an explorers paradise.
Hikes: Many 1-2 mile walks combined, allow for a great overview of the park. 4-8 milers to small peaks & historical sites.
Highlights: Solitude, amazing panoramas, giant boulders, century-old relics, great photo ops.
Painted & Ladder Canyons (San Andreas Fault, and 2 others!)
Walk on the most infamous earthquake fault in North America! The Mecca Hills Rec. Area is a true geologic wonderland! Slot Canyons, plateaus with forever vistas, most unusual rock formations & a good workout to boot.
Choose from a 3 mile or 6 mile loop. Booth hikes wind there way through the narrow, Ladder Canyon, with the longer loop spending more time on the plateau, and returning via the amazing, Painted Canyon.
Hike: This tour begins after a 3 mile dirt road drive. We'll walk into the Big Painted Canyon with 70 ft. walls & Palo Verde & Lavender trees. Then, we enter Ladder Canyon, 8 ft. wide & 50 ft. up on both sides. After climbing over several ladders to move beyond rock ledges, you're rewarded with 360 degree panoramic views on the entire eastern valley & the Salton Sea (largest in California).
We'll take a snack or lunch break, while your guide explains the forces that created this unique landscape.
Whitewater Canyon Preserve (convergence of 3 environments) Wildlands Conservancy
Here's a unique area where mountains / canyons, desert & coastal chaparral meet. A year-round stream, some great trails that journey onto a 360 degree view plateau.
Bighorn sheep, raptors, (including Falcons), assorted reptiles, and lots of wildflowers in the spring. Join us in April or May, with a chance to meet some Pacific Crest Trail thru-hikers, walking from Mexico to Canada.

A 20 min. drive from Palm Springs, this 2,200 ft. elevation Preserve is 10 degrees cooler. Peaceful trout ponds, shaded benches, lodge / visitors center. There's even an 8 mile, point to point hike on the PCT!
